Every decision is made based on how it benefits the downtown merchants. We have a fabulous, refurbished community center, and the adjacent huge park with tons of parking, but the art and craft shows all have to be held downtown because it makes business for the local merchants. Everyone has to put up with the lousy parking, and the traffic jams so the merchants can have their captive audience. The incredibly stupid decision to build the new Venice High School on the same spot is another decision based on the perceived benefit to the merchants. The rest of us put up with unbelievable traffic jams at both ends of the school day because more than 95% of the students live off of the island. Things will never change as long as the City Council cares only about the merchants and doesn't care about the rest of us.
