Well, all the studies show that the main reason for a high infection rate in any such facility is lack of diligent hand-washing by all staff between every different patient interaction. Poorly trained, inadequately supervised, and over burdened staff will take short cuts that include skipping this simple but effective deterrent. I am a retired RN who allowed my license to lapse in 2000 as I did not anticipate ever returning to the field. In order to return now, I would literally have to re-take the boards. Had I just kept the license paid up and done the continuing education credits I could return to work today with no need to take the boards again. This is a bit illogical to me. I can understand needing to take a refresher course due to the length of time away from the field, but not the need to re take the boards. It seems odd to me that in a field where there is a supposed critical shortage, some of us with great experience and a real passion for the work face real roadblocks to returning to the profession.
