Quite an honor, actually; will we be receiving a plaque?

Will the real mayor of Venice please step forward?

Mr. Mayor:

I have had some time to think about your statement that Venice Florida! dot com is "the worst thing ever that has happened to the City of Venice."

Tropical Storm Gabrielle, over 175 sewer leaks in one year, Mohamed Atta and his cadre being trained at Venice Municipal Airport, an FAA investigation into the city for "Diversion of Revenue," Federal whistleblower lawsuits, a major HUD investigation, an EPA investigation, the taping of a city manager by the FBI, embezzlement by the city's computer department head, the arrest of a 75-year-old man at a budget hearing (for which a lawsuit is pending with you as a named defendant), a still-unsolved bloody and vicious murder from the 1920s, the burning of a cross on a mayor's front lawn (circa the 1940s, I believe), a murder of a Big Brother volunteer about 5 years ago that happened in the condominium building in which I live, asbestos stored out in the open on city property -- unnoticed for almost 20 years, a guilty plea in Federal criminal court on the part of the city for illegal discharge and falsifying records, pending indictments against city officials... I'm sure I missed a few things in that list.

Venice Florida! dot com is the worst thing, even beyond all of the above.

To say I am flattered and honored is an understatement. Floored and absolutely stunned would be more like it. I had no idea that you held this web site in such high esteem, especially since, with the above litany of ills, it is obvious that Venice Florida! dot com has been running against some extremely stiff competition for the honor.

I look forward to receiving a Mayoral Proclamation with great pride. Will you also be providing a plaque or does that have to be paid for by the award recipient? Please let me know -- I will gladly write a check for the amount needed if it is so required.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for this great honor. A lot of hard work has been put forward over the past five or so years to make Venice Florida! dot com an organ that would have a lasting impact on government, particularly your administration. It is gratifying to see that you have received and acknowledged the thrust.

Spittle and froth - the background story to a mayoral mental meltdown

As part of a follow-up to a story on governmental headhunter Colin Baenziger, Venice Florida! dot com's John Patten asked the mayor if quotes attributed to the mayor by Baenziger were accurate.

The mayor's responded by... well, as the folks at Fark would say, his head asploded.

The mayor went off on both Patten and the Venice Taxpayers League in a long litany of largely fictional ills. Example: Calamaras implies that the League had filed an ethics complaint against former councilman Earl Midlam when no ethics complaint was ever filed against Midlam by anyone.

Midlam was, however, criminally charged with secretly taping conversations of other city council members without the knowledge of the participants, a misdemeanor. Midlam pled guilty and resigned from council. Curiously, the tape has never surfaced.

That's just one of a number of... revisionisms, for lack of a better word, that the mayor spouted off in an unexpected spittle and froth diatribe that could only be described as a moment of mayoral mental meltdown.

Then came the golden quote: "Your web site is the worst thing that ever happened to the City of Venice."

To prevent an accusation of misquoting the mayor (cuz you knew that'd happen), his entire rant was published online in MP3 audio (2.8 MBs).

Just to be clear on one thing that the mayor glossed over in his rant -- both he and former councilman Jim Myers were fined $500 each by the Florida Commission on Ethics for campaign violations. Contrary to Calamaras' statement in the audio, the ethics commission did say the pair did something wrong, specifically that the two of them had unlawfully used Venice Main Street's non-profit bulk-mail permit to send out campaign literature when they should have purchased their own permit.

The ruling, however, avoided the issue of using the wrong permit and instead focused on the pair's failure to report the free use of the meter as an in-kind contribution.

That said, now that this web site has been singled out for being historic in its sociologic harm by the mayor verbally, the question was raised: is there a plaque or official award or something involved in all of this?

John Patten is the head of Web Operations for Creative Pages, and has worked in broadcasting for over 12 years. He can also be incredibly rude at times.
